FAQ’s for Agents and Ship Masters

Can Hot Works be carried out whilst alongside?

Permission is granted for hot works if hot works are to be contained within the vessel whilst carrying out cargo operations at the berth.

If works are required to be completed from the wharf, the submission of a hot works permit is required.  Permits can be accessed from your agent.

Please ensure that stevedores are advised of the intended works.

If these works prevent the vessel from loading, berth hire will apply.

Can I immobilise my engine whilst alongside?

Prior to approving an engine immobilisation, the vessel’s master must request in writing for immobilisation detailing the reason for immobilisation, the time frame which the engine can be put to use in an emergency and the time frame required for the repairs.  The Master must also confirm that the immobilization of the main engine will not in any way impact on the vessels manoeuvring abilities for her departure.  The Harbour Master will then assess and approve on a case-by-case basis.

Can I conduct Lifeboat Drills within port limits?

The port does not recommend lowering lifeboats into the water whilst at anchorage, as it may be unsafe due to prevailing sea conditions.

Whilst at anchorage if you do decide to lower the lifeboat, please keep it clear of the water and request to do so via VHF to Geraldton Port during the hours of 0800-1700 Mon-Fri.

The Port will permit the ship to conduct a lifeboat drill in the harbour on the seaward side once alongside.  The lifeboat must be remained tethered to the vessel by a line at all times.  Again, permission can be granted via VHF radio during the days and times mentioned.

Will I lose my place in the queue if I leave the anchorage and slow steam?

No, your place in the queue if you have trouble maintaining position due to weather conditions.  It is recommended that if the vessel Master does have concerns that the vessel is or may drag that the vessel proceeds to sea and slow steams.

You will NOT need to call the Geraldton Port if you are leaving the anchorage, just notify your agent by email.

Can I Paint the hull of my vessel whilst being alongside?

Painting of the Ship’s hull is permitted however no removal of paint or rust flakes is permitted within the Harbour.
