Leeuwin sets sail on ocean adventure

Twenty-eight students stepped on board the STS Leeuwin II in June ready to experience a week at sea.

Local students and T.S. Morrow Navy Cadets came together to test their limits on a Leeuwin voyage.

Recognising the value of Leeuwin Ocean Adventure’s program, Mid West Ports Authority joined several other corporate and community partners to sponsor Geraldton youth on the voyage.

MWPA Chief Executive Dr Rochelle Macdonald said she was delighted to support the initiative for a second year running.

“For a lot of young people, it’s their first real taste of life on the open ocean and all the challenges and prospects that come with it,” she said.

“The Leeuwin provides a great opportunity to give young people a glimpse into the maritime world – it was where one of our own Marine Pilots discovered his love for the industry.

“It just goes to show how invaluable the experience can be and we’re thrilled to be able to enable that for another group of young people in Geraldton.”

The voyage departed Monkey Mia on 2 June and returned to Geraldton 9 June.
