DustTamer Wind Fence
Mid West Ports has installed a 90m long by 10m high DustTamer wind fence on Marine Terrace to assist in dust management from open stockpiles contained on the north side of this fence.
As part of a port-wide program of dust improvement initiatives, Mid West Ports resolved to identify opportunities which would provide short-term benefits, while long-term solutions were being sought and implemented.
The DustTamer wind fence is an engineered porous structure which equalises the pressures on either side of the fence and reduces wind velocity on the downwind side. They are very effective around stockpiles to prevent dust lift-off of particles from the piles. The technology is proven to be effective around the world and at other major ports.
Below is a graphic demonstrating wind movement around the stockpile without a fence, followed by a graphic demonstrating wind movement after fence installation.
What is it?
- 10m high, 90m long fence made of porous high tenacity polyester fabric.
- Specially engineered to reduce wind impacts.
How does it work?
- Reduces particle uptake from the sheltered stockpile by lowering the wind speed behind the fence whilst balancing the pressure on either side of the fence.
What are the benefits?
- Prevents uptake of dust from the open stockpile and rail corridor behind the fence.
- Reduces the amount of dust carried into the Fishing Boat Harbour.
